AG listens to reps of Hub fantasy sports website
Pac-12 conference president Larry Scott believes that the line between fantasy sports and gambling is too blurred, and his conference will not air ads for the sites on its network. Fantasy sports is swallowing America, one daily draft at a time. I also know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that most folks will lose, and some of them will become so addicted to the action, it can destroy their entire bankroll, family and life.
DraftKings and FanDuel are the two biggest fantasy football sites that offer instant payouts to winners. The bulk of that revenue comes from casual fans just looking to have some fun while watching sports. The team was placed on two years probation. “It’s something that we’re reviewing, and we’ll learn more about it”, Healey responded.
To put it a different way, watching Ole Miss vs. Alabama to see if Laquon Treadwell catches a touchdown pass somehow feels less valuable than watching Ole Miss vs. Alabama to enjoy some of the best college football out there.
Again, at this time, the daily games have not been ruled as “Gambling” even though they kind of are. It’s certainly possible for regular guys and gals to win, especially in the low-stakes low-reward leagues, but the game is still rigged against this type of player.
The future of daily fantasy sports in Louisiana is still up in the air.
But notice who’s absent from that list: student-athletes, and it’s probably not because they are heeding the NCAA’s warnings.
I have no problem with people who gamble on sports, but I have long reached my saturation point in regards to the commercialization of daily fantasy sports.
The aforementioned sites are literally everywhere; in the same magazines where collegiate superstars grace the covers; in sports event programs; streaming across televisions or devices during broadcasts; and on nearly every sports site we visit, there is no avoiding them.
Daily fantasy sports have also completely erased the illusion that all college athletes are equal.
DraftKings, FanDuel and their rivals are young and unprofitable but spending wildly in hopes of dominating an industry that could attract more annual player spending than Las Vegas’ sports books by next year, according to Eilers Research, which analyzes the gaming industry.
In Ohio, the attorney general’s office has not reviewed the issue; state legislators are not considering legislation about daily fantasy sports sites, a spokesman said. In college football, however, I think the practice is immoral. What’s the appeal? How are they making enough money to afford such a media blitz? But if I were a talented college athlete, I couldn’t imagine knowing that people all across the country were freely profiting off my performances, while I only received a scholarship worth a fraction of that profit. McCarthy says teams can “accept traditional advertising” from the likes of FanDuel and DraftKings.
