Deputy, man both dead after law office shooting
A suspect in the morning shooting of an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy is in custody, Sheriff’s officials said on their Facebook page.
Smith originally went to his lawyer’s office to be given a domestic violence injunction by Myers and turn over firearms to him, Ashley said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Both the deputy and suspect were taken to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
Smith drove to the Comfort Inn and Suites in Niceville where he barricaded himself inside a hotel room.
The OCSO Special Response Team responded and evacuated the building, setting up a perimeter.
Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley had this to say about Myers: “He served this community with distinction for decades”. “We also pray for his family and we appreciate all the prayers and support from the public and fellow law enforcement officers and other first responders during this hard ordeal”.
A central Florida deputy shot a man to death during a standoff after authorities say the man pointed a stapler at the deputy.
As Myers went with Smith to get the guns from Smith’s auto , Smith drew a concealed weapon and shot Myers multiple times, Ashley said. According to Ashley, Myers had been working to save money to take his granddaugher to Disney World.
There are unconfirmed reports that the suspect in the shooting of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy is dead. We will provide more updates as they become available.
Because the event had been set up by Smith’s attorney, who called authorities to tell them where to meet his client, it appeared Smith wasn’t a threat.
The deputy was serving a domestic violence injunction on Smith and Smith was supposed to be turning over his guns when the deputy was shot. He died at the same hospital as the deputy.
“Deputy Myers has been a treasured part of this agency’s family since 1989”.
A receptionist at the law firm declined comment to the Daily News. “I can’t say enough about this community”.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 27 officers have been killed by gunfire in the line of duty this year.
