Texas weighing AD Patterson’s future — HornsDigest.com Report
So it was no surprise on Tuesday that the University of Texas cut ties with embattled athletic director Steve Patterson after just two short years.
“It concerns me that fans voted with their feet”, Perrin said. If anyone can afford to pay them, it’s UT-Austin, which usually brings in the most revenue from sports in the country. “He had a very positive impact on many aspects of this department and our programs”.
UT-Austin President Greg Fenves invoked that skill when he introduced Perrin on Wednesday at a news conference.
“Athletics is vitally important to the Longhorn nation”, said Fenves. Mike is a devoted Longhorn and respected Texan who I firmly believe will strengthen relationships with and among our student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Perrin, who played for Darrell Royal from 1966-68 before becoming a successful Houston attorney, steps into a rocky situation for Texas athletics. As a Longhorn myself, a graduate of the University and its law school, I want nothing but the best for my alma mater, and I wish President Fenves and everyone at UT-Austin well as we continue the journey. He admitted he was first approached by Fenves about the interim AD position on Labor Day.
Brown was the former head coach of the football team at Texas, where he coached the Longhorns to a National Championship in 2005.
Word of Patterson’s job potentially being in jeopardy surfaced in the summer, and intensified leading up to his departure on Tuesday. Even though some fans are becoming restless with the Strong regime, there’s a growing consensus that the firing of Patterson will have little effect on the job security of Strong.
“This set-up has worked well for Texas”, Plonsky said. “We’re exclusive with our current and great partner, Nike”.
The decision comes after months of speculation about Patterson’s future. Boosters said the business-minded former AD wasn’t personable enough. Brandon, of course, was a Michigan stalwart who previously was on the school’s Board of Regents in Ann Arbor and could ride a bike to meetings on campus from his nearby world headquarters of Domino’s Pizza, where he served as CEO.
The following two tabs change content below. It also pushed some long-time season ticket-holders out of their seats.
“The season’s already underway”, Fenves said. I don’t see that changing.
Patterson was hired in November 2013 and has a guaranteed contract with Texas through August 2019.
He is also well connected across every area of the department. Patterson fired longtime sports information director John Bianco this summer after 23 years.
Fenves said that there’s no timeline for setting up a search committee to find a long-term athletic director. He expressed support for both head coaches, calling Strong a close friend and praising Smart’s style.
This is America and if your boss doesn’t like you, he or she can get rid of you with the quickness.
Patterson angered fans by raising football ticket prices by an average of 21 percent this season with the team coming off a 6-7 record.
