West – who has participated in Black Lives Matter and Occupy Wall Street protests – enthusiastically supported Jesse Jackson’s presidential bid decades ago, but he is even more enthusiastic about socialist Sanders’ agenda. “What is means is learning from countries like Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway – they have free healthcare for all of their people”.
“I do. I think once we understand what democratic socialism means”.
“Five billion bucks”, Bernie dryly replied.
Turning to Sanders’s age, Wilmore noted that the senator is now 74 and would be the oldest US president to take office. “Invoking 1989 classic, Wilmore asked be comfortable with a, let’s say, “Weekend at Bernie’s” situation, to get you through the rest of your administration”, before handing the senator a pair of black sunglasses.
“And the guy wasn’t even born in America”, Sanders said.
In an effort to get black voters to “feel the bern” Wilmore suggested Bernie tell them that his campaign is “on fleek” which Sanders adorable mispronounced as “unfleek”.

But, said West, “that’s what we are going to get – once black people find out who Brother Sanders is”. “We’ve also got to deal with real criminal justice reform”.
Near the end of the interview, the conversation veered to Donald Trump, who continues to lead in the race for the Republican nomination.
Sanders also donned a hat showing his allegiance to African-Americans with a bedazzled “Black Eyed-Peas Matter” emblem. Offering his expertise on everything cool, Wilmore suggested Sanders use the hilarious slang “on fleek” to reach Black voters.
Pulling it onto his head, Sanders asked, “And you think this is going to bring me over the top?”
