Nuclear Deal: Russian Federation wants arms embargo on Iran lifted after deal reached
Iran has offered “constructive solutions” to resolve disputes in nuclear talks with six major powers, the Iranian Students News Agency reported on Wednesday, but Western officials suggested they had heard nothing new from Tehran. His Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who broke with the West by advocating an end to an arms embargo against Iran, is expected to return to the talks on Sunday should compromises be found.
“As I discussed with President [Barack] Obama last night, we are not going to sit at the negotiating table forever”, Mr. Kerry told reporters.
But “Mr Tsipras has not turned to us for any aid”, Putin added.
Specifically, the petition calls for Iran to completely dismantle its nuclear program and for sanctions to remain in place until the Islamic Republic “relinquishes its destructive goals of spreading terrorism, destroying Israel, and achieving regional hegemony”.
Over the past two weeks, Iran, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russian Federation and China have twice extended a deadline for completing a long-term deal under which Tehran would curb sensitive nuclear activities for more than a decade in exchange for sanctions relief.
Joseph, a ex- special envoy for nuclear nonproliferation and Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and worldwide Security, went on to accuse the Obama administration of excessive optimism regarding the prospects for moderation of a regionally successful Iranian regime. We did not meet the July 7 deadline.
If a deal is sent to Congress after July 9 – Thursday – the period grows to 60 days, increasing the chance that the deal could unravel.
However, the Russian Foreign Minister has added pressure, saying the lifting of an arms embargo against Iran must be a priority after any permanent deal.
Iranian-backed militias are playing a key role in the fight against the jihadist group in neighbouring Iraq.
The underlying cause for the heightened display of anti-Americanism, analysts say, is the growing likelihood that Iran and its Western negotiating partners will sign a nuclear accord, opening the possibility of improving relations with the Great Satan, the United States. Air-conditioning systems in the luxurious Palais Coburg hotel are struggling with outside temperatures approaching 40°C, and some negotiators have found it hard to keep their cool during the discussions, officials say. “I hope it will really be a final meeting”.
This calculation explains why, according to officials from participating governments, the U.S position regarding the terms of a new Security Council resolution has, over the last few days, become less conducive to reaching a final agreement.
“Almost daily there are positive steps of progress”, Lavrov said of the talks in Vienna. All but the top diplomats from Russian Federation and China were present at Thursday’s meetings.
“We now engage with Iran as one doesn’t usually engage with one’s enemies”, Doran said.
“We all agreed that the main thing is the quality of the agreement that should ensure the balance of interests” by securing non-proliferation as well as respecting Iran’s rights.
