Prisoner uses bed sheets in escape, falls when knot slips
Two men in custody on minor offenses used bed sheets to escape a Kentucky jail late on Monday and were recaptured within hours, one with broken bones, officials said on Tuesday.
Matthew William Johnson, 29, and Christopher Cornelius, 37, escaped from the Community Correction Center in downtown Louisville at about 9 p.m., reports Wave3.com.
Johnson and Cornelius tied the sheets together and climbed down from the top of the E. Chestnut St. minimum security facility, Durham told the local TV station.
An observant nurse can be credited with helping officials take into custody two inmates who had escaped from the Community Correctional Center Monday night. Johnson was still at large as of Tuesday. However, no details have been released about how the two felons were captured, or how they got injuries that were evaluated by medical staff.
“They weren’t looking at a whole lot of (incarceration) time, I don’t think”, he said. Police say Johnson was hiding under a blanket in the auto and the driver was his other sister, Sarah Johnson, 26.
Cornelius was booked in July on several felony charges, including criminal trespass, theft and drug possession, WAVE reports.
