Miller loses 15th straight, Braves get blanked by Mets 4-0
Miller’s winless streak already was the longest for any big league pitcher in a season he was an All-Star.
“Your veteran guys step up and take over this time of year”, Collins said. It would serve the Braves well to end the season on a good note after all of their struggles in the second half of 2015. “Kind of rights the ship a little bit, especially after yesterday and all the things that have taken place”.
The Mets added two runs against rookie lefty Andrew McKirahan without him recording an out in the seventh, with Daniel Murphy’s two-run double extending the lead to 4-0.
With the way the Mets bats have gone to sleep this homestand, they needed Verrett (1-2) to be spectacular. Miller, who is 5-16 despite a 3.00 ERA, allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three and throwing a season-high 113 pitches.
Despite the loss, the Mets (85-66) saw their magic number to win the National League East reduced to six by virtue of the Washington Nationals’ 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
Miller only allowed two runs in six innings, but that’s apparently too much for this lineup.
David Wright homered as the Mets lost for the fifth time in seven games. He walked one and struck out eight in the winning effort.
“I said to [Niese] the other day – we were talking about some situations that perhaps may happen down the road – and I said, ‘Hey look, I need right now two of the best starts you’ve ever made in a row, ‘” Collins said. “[Tuesday’s] just another one of those games where if he comes out after six innings and he’s kept us in the game, he’s done his job and done it well”.
The Mets and Cespedes’ staff members, as stated by the New York Post, have transformed the rider in his present trade that lets the Mets just five days following the World Series in to signal him to your permanent price. Mets manager Terry Collins said RHP Jacob deGrom, whose turn in the rotation is being skipped Tuesday, will likely start during a four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds that begins Thursday. His last start was his worst of the season, where he only went 3.2 innings while allowing 5 runs (4 earned).
The Mets didn’t score again until the eighth inning. In his last 4 games, the Mets southpaw has a 7.97 ERA. He reached down and golfed a knee-high offering over the wall in right center for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. It was the third baseman’s second major league home run. Manager Fredi Gonzalez hopes he can return Tuesday. Over his last 23 starts, the Braves have scored a total of 22 runs while he’s been in the game. MRI results were negative on 3B-2B Juan Uribe, who bruised his chest on a diving stop Sunday night. The rookie has pitched well in two spot starts for Harvey within the last month.
