Emmy awards show draws record low TV audience
Political satire “Veep“, also from HBO, picked up four awards including Best Comedy Series and Best Actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, her fourth consecutive win.
Davis was honored with an Emmy for her work in the freshman series How to Get Away with Murder. While AMC got its kudos via a few Better Call Saul nominations, the show was shut out from the awards, along with Empire – both shows that broke ratings records in their first seasons.
Jon Stewart took home an Emmy for The Daily Show in bid farewell to his team and the viewers. The actor dedicated his award to the transgender community.
HBO’s “Veep” vied for top comedy prizes with “Transparent“, in which Mr. Tambor plays the patriarch of a Los Angeles family who reveals to his children that he has long felt he’s a woman and is going to dress like one.
“Game of Thrones” Season 6 premieres in 2016 on HBO.
The award comes only a year after Laverne Cox made history and became the first transgender woman to be nominated for an Emmy. “I can’t seem to get over that line.’ That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s”, Davis said.
Davis spoke of the inequality in opportunities and said: ‘Let me tell you something. Regina King (of ABC’s “American Crime“) and Uzo Aduba (of Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black“) also earned supporting trophies. Bradley Whitford walked away with the accolades for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Transparent, which registered another win – for Jill Soloway in Directing for a Comedy.
Variety Sketch Series: “Inside Amy Schumer”, Comedy Central. Lisa Cholodenko won the Emmy for outstanding directing for a limited series, while Jane Anderson won for writing for a limited series.
The premium cable network won for best drama, comedy, movie and miniseries among its 14 victories on Sunday – more than all other networks combined.
Supporting Actress, Comedy Series: Allison Janney, “Mom“, CBS. “Fox NFL Sunday” is broadcasting from the red carpet and the Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys telecast precedes the awards.
