Ducks G Gibson lands three-year extension
The Ducks announced Monday afternoon that they’ve extended the 22-year old netminder with a three-year, $6.9 million deal. It breaks down as $1.5 million in the first year, $2.1 million in the second season and $3.3 million in the final season.
Then, presumably, Gibson would challenge Andersen for the starting gig in 2016-17, when his new contract kicks in. “Obviously I want to be here sooner than later, but I can’t really control that”.
Gibson closed out saying he just needs to go out there and do his job when he gets the call. He also spent half the season in the AHL, though, where the former Team USA World Juniors star posted a.935 SV% with the Norfolk Admirals in 11 regular season games.
Last season, Anaheim were close to the Stanley Cup, which the team last won in the 2006-07 season, but were unable to withstand the challenge presented by eventual champions the Chicago Blackhawks. “I want young players who want to stay and be a part of this organization,” said General Manager Bob Murray, who has spoken to representatives of Despres and Vatanen.
John Gibson was drafted 39th overall in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks, and the standout Pittsburgh native has been doing his best to prove that he deserves to stick around for the Pacific Division club. Before, I was a little bit up in the air because of so many things that could happen. Several teams asked the Ducks about Gibson’s availability this summer, and Murray shot them down. “But now I’ve got training camp, and worry about this team first”.
