NFLPA thinks Cowboys, Broncos talked Dez, Demaryius deals
If there’s proof of collusion, Bryant and Thomas could sue for damages. The NFLPA wants to find out.
“NFLPA is reviewing information to determine whether there was collusion between the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys on the unsettled contractual situations of franchise WRS Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant, per an NFLPA official”, writes Schefter. By colluding on a price point, Denver and Dallas could agree to limit to any potential exorbitant sum, saving each other money in the long run.
A collusion, according to dictionary.com, is a secret agreement, especially for fraudulent or treacherous purposes, or a conspiracy.
The NFLPA said it believes the Broncos and Cowboys talked to each other about the two players’ contracts.
As of the time of this writing, neither the Broncos nor the Cowboys have commented on the NFLPA’s review. Set to enter their sixth National Football League seasons, neither player was able to hammer out a long-term deal with their organization prior to this offseason, hence the application of the franchise tag.
The deadline for Thomas and Bryant to reach a long-term deal is Wednesday, July 15.
The NFLPA apparently suspects that the teams are trying to avoid setting the receivers’ market too high. If they can’t, they can only play this season on the one-year, $12.8 million contract that comes with the franchise tag. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
