BYU football: Cougars to play at Oregon in 2022
Harvey Langi catches an interception during the game against UCLA.
Ricky: BYU is known for its Latter-Day Saints involvement but it’s been getting acquainted with the Hail Mary this season.
The Cougars scheduled Nebraska, Boise State, UCLA, Michigan and Missouri in 2015. Zach, how exciting has it been to see a team successfully convert Hail Mary play in consecutive weeks to start the season? But Payton’s second drop wasn’t entirely his fault, as the ball was thrown behind him.
Ricky:Mangum has really stepped up in the absence of Taysom Hill. What should we expect from Mangum as he takes on the Wolverines?
Given its dominant run game and solid defense, the team should run through Colorado, Oregon State and Washington State putting it at 9-1 when it visits Utah. Mangum is the king of final second miracles, but this Michigan defense understands decent pass coverage. For the most part, the receivers did their job against BYU, they just needed the quarterback to get them the ball in the right spots. It’s troubling to see that he’s been the complete opposite, especially against lower-tier competition. The grades aren’t quite as stellar as they were in past weeks, as the Bruins struggled to win for the first time this season. Partly because I also don’t believe Morris is the answer.
When the players took the practice field on Tuesday, coaches scrapped their usual plan of a physical, yet measured practice session and had their players go full contact.
UCLA’s offense has a different way of doing business with freshman Josh Rosen at quarterback instead of Brett Hundley, the team’s starter the previous three seasons. Let Rudock polish up his game in a new system and soon, everything will come to fruition. He had two interceptions last season, and returned both for touchdowns. Against UCLA, the Cougars were on the opposite side.
Utah is 1-3 against ranked Oregon teams, winning in 2003 and losing in 2001, 2013 and 2014. UCLA scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to squeak out a 1-point win. He has 15 tackles, and he had the game-clinching interception against BYU.
Less than an hour after he rushed for a career-high 219 yards in UCLA’s narrow win over BYU last Saturday, Paul Perkins stood in front of a swath of reporters near the Bruins’ locker room at the Rose Bowl and stared down the same sort of question that has been posed to him countless times over the past year. The Cougars won the turnover battle, too. He caught six passes for 119 yards, including a 70-yard score, against the Wildcats last season.
True freshman quarterback Josh Rosen is human after all. Expect a much better showing from Mangum this weekend. To put it mildly, BYU’s defense had a hard time wrapping up UCLA’s running backs. The two schools have met a total of six times, with four of those contests taking place in Eugene. Perkins is averaging 143.0 yards per game; Wilson is at 144.7.
As what seems to be the norm, Utah’s defense continues to lead the way, ranking second in run defense in the Pac-12 and No. 27 in the nation, allowing just 105.7 yards per game. On multiple occasions, the inexperienced Fisher was lined up about seven yards away from the line of scrimmage, as if to prevent BYU from making the big pass play over the top.
