Cardinals get good news on Adam Wainwright, bad on Yadier Molina
Molina will have the injury re-examined Saturday, and the club hopes he can return before season’s end, but how effective will he be offensively if he can come back?
Molina will be re-evaluated late this week or early next week.
Molina, the Cardinals’ Platinum and Gold Glove catcher, was hurt Sunday in Chicago making a tag at the plate on a sliding Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs. Yadier Molina is due for an MRI today and a meeting with doctors this afternoon to determine the extent of the sprain in his left thumb.
Ace Adam Wainwright, believed to be shelved for the entire season after he ripped up his Achilles tendon coming out of the batter’s box on April 25, has been cleared to resume baseball activities.
Molina does not need surgery, and the tear is less severe than the one Molina suffered past year in his right thumb, which ended up costing the seven-time All-Star 40 games. When Molina is behind the dish the Cards are 85-46, while they are 8-10 with any other catcher.
Yadier Molina is now batting.270 with four home runs and 61 RBIs.
Mozeliak said he would feel a lot more comfortable adding his prize arm to the postseason roster if he was able to receive some regular season work beforehand.
“If you’ll recall the last time he pitched out of the bullpen, he looked very good“, general manager John Mozeliak said. Cruz then called Monday’s 2-1 win against Cincinnati while showing some life at the plate.
“It’s always tough to fill someone’s shoes when you’re as talented as Yadi is”, Mozeliak said. “Last time we had him in the outfield, it had to be an underhand flip”, Mozeliak said. The Pirates beat the Dodgers on Sunday to remain four games behind St. Louis. He is scheduled to pitch a simulated game this weekend and we will see what develops from there. He was originally expected to miss the entire 2015 season, but he’ll now try to return as a reliever, according to Goold. He began the season at Class AA Altoona where he hit.302 with 3 home runs in 45 games.
