Prince William speaks out against homophobia
The event began with Wills participating in an activity that asked him to write the name of five people who he’d turn to if he were being bullied on a paper hand cut-out.
It was a powerful list but even that was perhaps eclipsed by the edgy message he sent out about royal support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.
The Duke of Cambridge met staff at a London-based school and took part in training sessions to tackle bullying.
During a discussion about how to handle bullying against an LGBTI person, William said he would comfort the victim then confront the bully.
One of the teens involved, 17-year-old Tom Broughton hailed the prince’s support for confronting the homophobic bully as the “embodiment” of Princess Diana’s legacy, the Daily Mail reported.
But it was his decision to add a sixth support that had us all barking with joy.
“It’s something that must be really deeply rooted in his want for justice and for everybody to be equal. It’s just incredible to see someone from royalty stand up and say this”, he added.
“He was relaxed with the young people”, Tessy Ojo, the charity’s chief executive, added. Prince William said that he would confront the abuser after comforting the victim.
“Princess Diana was never a bystander”. The Diana Award identifies and develops young people before engaging them in social action. He hopes it will help de-stigmatise bullying issues in schools.
The Cambridges selected the Beatbullying charity as one of the recipients of their wedding gift donations.
The Diana Award’s nationwide Anti-Bullying Ambassadors programme has been running for a number of years and has more than 16,000 ambassadors – mostly students – supporting pupils in 3,000 schools across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
“He particularly likes the idea of a peer-led support network to prevent any child or young person suffering in silence”.
