Detroit Tigers blow no-hitter but beat White Sox 2-1
Many have doubted whether Verlander would ever be able to touch that velocity again following muscle core surgery.
In this week’s episode, Anthony Fenech and Drew Sharp discuss the Bruce Rondon ouster, how next season’s bullpen is shaping up and more Detroit Tigers issues. “Prior to that, he pitched outstanding”. Brad Ausmus was the catcher for Houston when they used six pitchers to no-hit the Yankees on June 11, 2003, while Robin Ventura was the New York third baseman. “Scored a run, but he was able to stop the bleeding”. “It gave me a chance to focus on that and really visualize (my starts) for the time I get to come back. The same effort was producing 94, 95, 96 earlier”. While his overall batting average doesn’t look sustainable, it’s Shaw’s home run pace that should stir the skeptics.
“He’s trending upward in a lot of categories”, Ausmus said.
“I felt really good, especially as I got deeper into the game”, Norris said.
Verlander said he’s not trying to prove the doubters wrong about his velocity.
“Things didn’t go like I wanted”, said Montas.
Daniel Norris, who was on a limit of 60-65 pitches in his second start back from an oblique injury, threw five flawless innings before being lifted. He allowed five hits and two walks. This after going through a super-slump where Martinez had bat just.202/.238/.272 from August. 7 – September 14 with only one home run and 10 RBI.
Chicago shortstop Alexei Ramirez had an RBI double in the seventh. The two men discussed how they were going to attack the next batter, Carlos Sanchez, but after the first fastball Verlander threw, that pitch sequence was subsequently scrapped. After giving up a walk to Gordon Beckham to load the bases, he finished his outing with the strikeout of Soto.
With his home run, Martinez becomes just the sixth Venezuelan-born player to reach 200 homers in a career. Davis singled and Victor Martinez ripped a 94-mph inside fastball for a two-run homer with two outs to put Detroit ahead.
The Tigers final run came the following inning, when Ian Kinsler drove in Rajai Davis on an infield single. His game-winner wasn’t a surprise to Chicago supporters, as he’s a.305 career hitter against the White Sox. Detroit loaded the bases with one out and J.D. Martinez ripped a ground-rule double down the left-field line.
Ryan tossed seven innings against the Chicago White Sox in his spot start and gave up two runs on six hits. Reliever Alex Wilson served up a two-run homer to Salvador Perez, preventing Verlander from collecting his fourth win this season.
