Davis Accused of Tampering with Marriage Licenses

Kim Davis, clerk of Rowan County, Kentucky, is being sued once again after allegedly altering the marriage licenses issued by her office – possibly in defiance of a court order.

Ms Davis, a Democrat who serves Rowan County, a rural area in eastern Kentucky, was released under the condition that she would not interfere as her deputy clerks issued marriage licences.

Davis, 50, has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Davis said she’s prepared to go back to jail, where she spent five days earlier this month after staunchly defying a Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage in June.

The lawyers asked the judge to order the Rowan County clerk to reissue the licenses. The licenses also said they were issued due to a court order, according to the ACLU.

In a federal court filing Monday, the lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union said the altered licenses signal that “LGBT couples are second-class citizens”. This new license deleted all mentions of the county, removed her name, and deleted every reference to the deputy clerks.

Davis says she’s just a normal person.

However, when put to her that same-sex couples feel like getting married is a fundamental part of being treated with dignity, Davis insisted that they don’t have a constitutional right to dignity. That means that a judge could appoint an outside person for the objective of overseeing the issuance of marriage licenses, in order to ensure the licenses being issued are valid.

Kim Davis won’t make any exceptions, either. But he noted that Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear said last week that the altered marriage licences would be recognized by the state.
