Immigrant population on rise again, census finds
And nearly all immigrants have “consumed at least one form of English language media prior to departure”, which also helps improve their knowledge of the language.
“When a patient arrives whose primary language is Spanish, and they don’t find any Spanish signage or a setting that embraces their cultural values, this creates fear and mistrust”, says Dr. Martinez.
She discussed the report with university writer Yasmin Aswar. The consequences of integration thus touch everyone, from neighbors and co-workers, to our school systems, the technology sector, health care institutions, and more. Any surprises?
The new data indicate that growth in the immigrant population is accelerating. Improvements in the educational outcomes for children with parents from modest backgrounds are striking. Cases such as these prevent many illegal immigrants from seeking care.
The influx of undocumented immigrants are often uninsured, which has an impact on healthcare spending. However, integration is slowed down by a lack of legal status or a precarious immigration status.
“India and China are still significant senders of illegal immigrants”, said Steven Camarota, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington, DC-based research institute that advocates for controlled immigration.
Nevada also has a higher share of illegal immigrants in its workforce than all other states. So to repeat: when did we vote for this?
Similarly, while immigrants are more likely to be poor than native-born Americans, the poverty rate for overall for immigrants declines with each successive generation: from an 18.4 percent poverty rate in the first generation down to an 11.5 percent rate in the third.
What is holding them back?
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2013 more than 68,000 Iowa residents identified as being Asian alone and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, accounting for about 2.2 percent of the state’s population. I do hope that the panel’s findings will help inform the public debate.
That immigrants bring crime.
The report also said that neighborhoods with greater concentrations of foreign-born people have much lower rates of crime and violence than similar nonimmigrant neighborhoods. One of the big limitations, they wrote, is a “dearth of available longitudinal data to measure immigrant integration”.
It’s the same story when it comes to health.
Immigrants are healthier than the native-born, have longer life-expectancies, and have lower crime rates, the academics concluded. However, over time and generations, these advantages decline as their health status converges with that of the native-born population. At least half of the immigrant population speaks English “very well” or “well”, and less than 10 percent said they speak English “not at all”. Indeed, linguistic integration happens more quickly now than a century ago. Funding has not kept pace with rising numbers, however.
Does the report examine birthright citizenship?
As of 2014, one in eight USA residents was born overseas – more than double the amount in 1980.
From our investigation, it is clear that immigration is contributing to demographic renewal, an important process given the retirement of the Baby-Boomer generation. “The face of immigration is changing”. There is a strong need for further data collection, disaggregation, and analysis on the AAPI population both in Iowa and the United States.
What can presidential candidates and elected officials learn from this report?
For instance, despite large differences among the first-generation immigrant groups regarding education, their children “meet or exceed the schooling level of typical third-generation and higher native-born Americans”. But it’s a misleading one – immigrant culture doesn’t get melted down and disappear into a monochromatic whole, it both changes the whole and is changed at the same time. This could be reassuring for policy-makers.
Although the number of illegal immigrants fell by 20,000 during the three-year period, there were still 210,000 unauthorized immigrants, or 7.6 percent of the state’s population, Reuters reported.
