Presidential debate schedule unveiled

The Commission on Presidential Debates was established in 1987 to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners.

Hopkins didn’t disclose what the university will spend on the debate, but he said it will be in the millions of dollars.

“Although we’re disappointed we’re certainly not defeated and I’m going to continue to fight for those things that make West Virginia stronger”, he said.

The organization highlighted that initiative when reacting to news of the Las Vegas debate, and its president, Geoff Freeman, called UNLV the ideal setting for informing candidates about the casino industry.

But the commission’s executive director, Janet Brown, insisted that wasn’t the case. The vice presidential debate is to be held at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. He said it should put to rest any concerns that government entities may have about hosting meetings in Las Vegas.

Vassiliadis credited Jessup for injecting energy into the process and leading the community in its effort to put Las Vegas on the debate stage.

Ohio is the nation’s leading bellwether in presidential elections; the Buckeye State has backed the victor in every race except two (1944, 1960) since 1900. In return, the university said it received about $30 million in exposure. In 2016, with no incumbent running, and with a primary season attracting high interest, viewership could be even greater, a fact not lost on UNLV President Len Jessup.

National experts say the first debate may be especially important in 2016, given that neither candidate will be an incumbent. “With all the dynamics around the election this year, we’ll be perhaps watched more than any other debate prior”.

The selection cements Nevada’s, and Las Vegas’ emergence on the national political scene.
