Migrant killed by Eurotunnel train
A young migrant has died overnight trying to make the risky journey from Calais in northern France to Britain using the Channel Tunnel.
The boy, thought to be from east Africa and in his mid- to late-teens, was found unconscious in the early hours of Thursday morning near rail tracks leading to the tunnel, which is a route used by refugees to reach the United Kingdom.
“A migrant was hit by a freight shuttle at around 2:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) on the tunnel site”, an official announced, adding the victim was probably from Eritrea or Sudan. “An investigation is underway”, the local prefecture said in a statement, according to the Independent.
Mashable has reached out to French officials in Calais for further information. Peter Sutherland, the United Nations special representative on migration, has said he was shocked by the awful conditions at the makeshift campgrounds in Calais dubbed the “jungle”. Last week a man died after being electrocuted at the entrance to the Eurotunnel in Calais, and was found on the roof of a freight train, the BBC said. United Kingdom has also committed to take in 20,000 Syrian refugees from camps in countries neighboring Syria.
