Spieth stumbles in 1st round of John Deere Classic — Washington Times Herald
The tournament typically has a somewhat underwhelming field, but two-time 2015 major victor Jordan Spieth maintained his commitment to the event which he won in 2013, elevating the status of this week’s event.
Reigning Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth ratcheted up his preparation for next week s British Open by firing a seven-under 64 in Friday s second round of the PGA John Deere Classic. He’s going to have to post something ridiculously low Sunday, but even that may not be enough if Spieth continues his fine play. “I couldn’t find any answers”. He started on the back nine and shot 30. “But I bounced back from those scenarios nicely”. Thomas then dropped back to par with a bogey on the par-4 14th before birdieing each of the final four holes.
Spieth made three more birdies on par 4s, and he hit a 12-footer on No. 16 to join Lee in first.
“I’m like, ‘That looks pretty nifty, ‘ so I tried to do the same thing”, Stricker said. “I’m not displeased with anything”.
GLENVIEW, Ill. (AP) – Jerry Smith matched a tournament record with an 8-under-par 64 to take a three-shot lead after the second round of the Encompass Championship.
“I have struggled all year and I need some money to keep my card, ” Brooks said.
“There was a lot of ups and downs, but I was with global Sports Management at the time and they’re based over there, so I was able to travel with some of their guys which made it very easy”. He closed out his round with a par on the ninth. “It’s been really frustrating for me”. “It was a tough lie, with no grass around it, deep and spongey and into the grain. My pace control, my speed is awesome right now”, Spieth said.
It has been a stunning form turnaround by the 21-year-old American, who was in danger of missing the cut until he put together a string of birdies in the middle of the second round. “I felt really comfortable”.
That had him in striking distance, just two strokes off the lead being set by American Tom Gillis at 18-under with eight holes to play. Spieth roared back into contention with four birdies in five holes, including a 21-foot chip from the fringe on No. 16. I wasn t feeling good about my game. “I’ll just try to carry that on, stay calm, and see what we get”. He is five shots back heading into the weekend.
Bryce Molder, Steve Wheatcroft, Robert Garrigus, and Spencer Levin were tied at 9-under 133.
GULLANE, Scotland (AP) – Some of the top names in golf were upstaged by a player ranked No. 528 in the world at the Scottish Open on Friday, with unheralded Englishman Daniel Brooks surging into a surprise three-shot lead after the second round. He is tied for 16th with defending champion Brian Harman (68) and four others at 7- under 135.
He was even more impressive yesterday, firing a round of 61 that included two eagles and six birdies as he seized first place in the tournament.
Thomas, who shared the first-round lead with Nicholas Thompson, finished 36 holes at 12-under-par 130. “It should be fun”.
