8-month-old boy found dead in SUV in Walmart parking lot
The auto was then driven home to Garfield Heights and the baby was left inside.
Macedonia police discovered the child after receiving a report of an unresponsive baby around 5:30 pm ET Wednesday, the department said in a news release.
Benjamin was in a seat in the third row of the SUV when one of his parents dropped off his three siblings at daycare on Wednesday morning, Macedonia police Lieutenant Vince Yakopovich said.
At approximately 11 a.m. the grandmother of the 8-month-old got into the vehicle and drove to work at Walmart, not knowing the child was in the vehicle. The woman reportedly did not look in the back of the vehicle and did not see the baby. That’s when the child’s grandmother went to check the vehicle and found the baby dead inside.
The baby was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m.
The Summit County Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy on Thursday. The auto was towed shortly after 8 p.m., and the parking lot reopened.
Investigators are looking into the incident but say it appears to “a tragic accident and not a matter of foul play”, according to police.
The baby was already dead when police arrived at Walmart.
