Judge rules in favor of Ann Arbor school district, dismisses challenge over
Kuhnke said Michigan law prohibiting local governments from making firearms policies doesn’t apply to schools.
Ann Arbor argued that guns in schools cause a disruption and students should not have to be intimidated.
The suit had its roots in an incident earlier this year when a lawful open carrier attending his sister’s performance at an area high school was subjected to both public ridicule and police attention because he was armed.
23 granted the district’s motion for summary disposition, dismissing the Michigan Gun Owners lawsuit that claimed Ann Arbor schools’ policies that ban guns from schools are illegal.
“We are thrilled, I don’t think we are surprised”, said Ann Arbor School Superintendent Dr. Jeanice Swift, a co-defendant in the case.
Thiede, who said schools are risky places, noted he’s carried his gun twice in schools while picking up his grandchildren and has had no problem.

Jim Makowski, an attorney for a group called Michigan Gun Owners, says he will appeal. “Because we’re allowed to keep sacred the critical mission of a safe and productive learning environment”.
The Freep writes that the decision conflicts with one last month in Genesee County, where a judge ruled that a parent in the Clio School District has a right to openly carry his gun at his daughter’s school. “I don’t believe it is a teacher and administrator’s job to determine the intent of that person who is walking into a school”.
