Tigers lose no-hitter, but top ChiSox 2-1 in 10 innings
Norris will likely be on a short leash as he makes his second start since returning from almost a four-week stay on the disabled list with an oblique strain. The young lefty was removed after 63 pitches despite having retired all 15 batters he faced with four strikeouts.
With Neftali Feliz in to pitch the ninth – not Rondon – the club’s no-hit bid was broken up by a Tyler Saladino triple, followed by a ground-ball single from Eaton that knotted the game at 1-1. Rajai Davis, though, delivered a run-scoring triple in the 10th to give the Tigers a 2-1 win, their fourth extra-inning victory in the last week. He’ll start against the Rangers on the road next. September.
Then it featured Peak Tigers Ninth Inning.
Anthony Gose drew a two-out walk from Zach Duke (3-6) in the 10th.
Judging from his lack of excitement Tuesday night, the Chicago White Sox third baseman might not recall this one for long.
Montas, a 22-year-old right-hander, has made five relief appearances since he was called up September 1, allowing one earned run and striking out 10 over eight innings pitched.
“Bruce Rondon”, the manager said without hesitating. Norris, who will likely be limited to approximately 65 pitches on Tuesday, is 0-2 with a gaudy 9.00 ERA in three home starts this season.
“I love playing baseball”, Norris said. He only says that Rondon had been sent home because of his “effort level” and that he and general manager Al Avila were in “complete agreement” on the move. Ian Krol ended the ideal game when he hit Eaton with the second pitch of the seventh inning but retired the next three batters and passed the baton to Drew VerHagen, who delivered a flawless eighth inning. But it’s not like we’re up there like, ‘Oh, let’s break up a no-hitter.’ We’re trying to win a ballgame, so in that situation, it’s not about the hit.
Earlier in the game, Davis said he was wondering how the celebration would to unfold, should the club accomplish the never-been-done-before pitching feat. “Thank goodness (Quintana) didn’t take the loss today with how well he did and how deep he went into the game, again against a lineup that gives him a hard time”.
And the Tigers’ latest find put an end to a game that was anything but standard.
