5-Year-Old Girl Delivers Message On Immigration To Pope Francis
So sweet! Pope Francis had a very important meeting during the papal motorcade in Washington D.C. when he was approached by five-year-old, Sophie Cruz. Pope Francis stopped the parade and beckoned her to approach.
Pope Francis and Sophie met on Wednesday when the five-year-old girl brought him a letter calling for immigration reform.
Cruz carried a yellow t-shirt whose Spanish-language lettering translated to “Pope: Rescue DAPA so the legalization would be your blessing”, referring to President Obama’s executive action (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents) that would add additional deportation protections for millions of undocumented immigrants with U.S.-born children.
“I’m scared that the [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] will take my family away”.
Born on USA soil to Mexican parents, Sofia traveled across the country as part of a group of a dozen faithful, her father among them, from Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles parish in Los Angeles.
“The police wanted to move her aside, but the pope asked for his auto to stop”, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told reporters.
Pope Francis, who has become known as the “People’s Pontiff”, spoke at a ceremony before thousands on the South Lawn of the White House Wednesday where he touched on several divisive issues including: climate change, U.S.-Cuba relations, marriage and immigration.
“I believe I have the right to live with my parents”, the letter read, according to AP.
“All immigrants just like my dad feed this country”. She hopes one day she won’t live in fear that her father could be forced out of the country they call home. “They deserve to live with respect”. Sophia says she doesn’t remember what she wrote in that letter to the pope but she knows it made her feel “happy”.
“She came back and her father was just in tears”.
Pope Francis, 78, was greeted by rapturous crowds as he paid his first ever visit to America.
