Yogi Berra, Baseball Legend & World’s Most Quotable Man, Dies At 90
The baseball world is remembering the life of New York Yankees legend Yogi Berra, who died Tuesday at the age of 90.
“While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom”. On battling the shadows in left field at Yankee Stadium; “
It gets late early out there.”
After the advent of Yogi Bear in 1958, Berra reportedly attempted to sue the studio of Hanna-Barbera for defamation of character before withdrawing his complaint.
I never said most of the things I said.
Five or six days a week, New York Yankees legend Yogi Berra would work out at the New Jersey Devils’ practice facility and chat up former general manager Lamoriello and his players. “But it’s a sad day for baseball, for me, and for the Hall of Fame”.
Berra, born Lawrence Peter Berra in St. Louis, dropped out of school in eighth grade to go to work to support his family.
Among his contributions to the vernacular: “It ain’t over ’til it’s over”, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it”, and “It’s deja vu, all over again”.
President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that Berra was “an American original – a Hall of Famer and a humble veteran; prolific jokester and jovial prophet”. “But egads, you gotta be somethin’ to get in”. After serving in the Navy in World War II. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Carmen.
Berra played in the majors from 1945 to 1965, mostly with the Yankees.
“We told him, ‘Yogi, hold the logo up, so you can read it. He said, ‘I ain’t up here to read, I’m here to hit, ‘” Louisville Slugger Museum employee PJ Shelley said.
“Who would want to steal from Yogi Berra?” he asked.
He tickled TV viewers in recent years by bringing his malapropisms to a commercial with the AFLAC duck. “You better cut the pizza in four slices”, he once said, “because I’m not hungry enough to eat six”. Yogi Berra might have died, but he will live on among New Yorkers, baseball fans of all stripes and lovers of pop culture. “Why don’t you surprise me?”
