Basketball | Report: LeBron James won’t talk to Cavs until they re-sign
Even though the Cavs aren’t worried about losing the best basketball player in the world, it could be some time before James signs his new deal.
That is because James himself is a free agent after opting out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. James and Thompson both have Rich Paul as an agent.
As mentioned by Brian Windhorst from ESPN.com, the Cavaliers need to get a new deal with Tristan Thompson done before he will re-sign with the team.
James has not been involved in the recruitment of free agents until his own free agency is settled.
As mentioned by multiple reports, the Pacers and Lakers reached agreement on a deal Saturday that can not be completed until the National Basteball Association moratorium on signings ends after July 9. The 34-year-old Johnson is set to make almost $25 million for the upcoming season.
For the Cavs, West would backup Kevin Love at the power forward spot, with Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson manning the center position.
Free agent guard Lou Williams, the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2014-2015, agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract with the Lakers, multiple media outlets reported Sunday.
Marc Gasol is in a similar situation to James.
We know the Cavs played better defense without Love. Gasol hasn’t negotiated with other teams, but there’s yet to be an announcement that he’s returning to the Memphis Grizzlies. However, talks have reportedly broken down since then. Getting West to sign could direct how the Cavs use their Brendan Haywood contract trade chip and what veterans they pursue to sign on for the minimum.
After coming to terms with LaMarcus Aldridge, San Antonio reportedly intensified its recruitment of West. However, Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Cleveland, despite an absolutely loaded frontcourt, has gained a slight lead in the ongoing sweepstakes for the bruiser’s services.
