The world mourns baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra
Berra still holds multiple Yankees records about the World Series, including 75 games played, at-bats, hits, and doubles. Berra was named the Mets’ manager in 1972 following the unexpected death of Hodges and guided the Amazin’s to another World Series appearance in 1973. If he was like my similarly-aged grandfather he may not have cared much for it. But he rolled with the changes as far as baseball went.
Right down the street from Steinbrenner Field in Tampa is Mom’s Place Restaurant.
Following his playing career, Berra managed the Yankees, Mets and Houston Astros.
Berra was sly when asked whether all the quotes attributed to him were truly his own.
Berra was born May 12, 1925, in St. Louis, the son of poor Italian immigrants, and grew up in the city’s “Hill” Italian section. “If you come to a fork in the road, take it” was his too. He joined the Navy at 18, was married to his beloved wife Carmen for 65 years, and had more fun with the English language than any player in history.
He was sacked once again, in 1985, after just 22 games. “His numbers are incredible, but his presence and how he dealt with people were really the biggest thing”.
The baseball world suffered a tremendous loss this morning. When Berra retired in 1963, the Yankees made him the team manager.
“Thick body. Baggy knickers”.
Yogi Berra died at the age of 90 Tuesday.
Berra was treated like a celebrity wherever he went, but despite being in the public eye for almost six decades he remained intensely shy. But Berra will be remembered for far more than those on-field exploits.
The Hall of Fame honors Berra for his accomplishments as a player, including catching the only ideal game in World Series history. To those lucky ones who did, he was an even better person. He also created a scholarship at Columbia University.
Speaking at an unrelated event in the Bronx today, Mr.de Blasio-an ardent baseball fan of Berra’s rival, the Boston Red Sox-paid tribute to the ballplayer. He was sacked after the season.
