Chancellor Returns to Seattle
Chancellor missed the first two regular season games in a holdout that officially began when he missed the first day of training camp on July 31 – making it 54 days overall.
Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor is ending his holdout and returning to the team. “God forgives all, why can’t i?”
Prime time game last night a rematch of what we saw in the NFC title game from Century Link back in January…
Chancellor acknowledged that he considered sitting out the entire season, but already knows he made the right choice because the locker room “greeted me with open arms”.
It’s impossible to say if Chancellor’s presence would have helped the Seahawks avoid an 0-2 start, but his absence from the secondary was noticeable.
“I’m happy to be back playing football, happy to be back with the organization, with my team, with my teammates, my coaches,” he said.
After the 2012 campaign, Chancellor inked a four-year, $28 million contract extension that took effect after 2013.
According to Adam Schefter, per a text conversation between Chancellor and ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, the decision to return is more about helping his brothers in arms rather than cowing to Seattle. Kam Chancellor has returned to the Seattle Seahawks after holding out the first two games of the season.
The worst part is, Chancellor and the Seahawks have supposedly lost contact over the past week. He is scheduled to make a base salary of $5.1 million in 2016 and $6.8 million in 2017.
The addition of Chancellor on the field is obvious, but it’s what he brings to the locker room that could also benefit the struggling Seattle team.
His standoff has proved costly for both sides – the Seahawks losing two in a row and Chancellor forgoing some $2 million in wages.
Seattle coach Pete Carroll said the team is planning for Chancellor to play against Chicago, but said that would be assessed as the week goes on. Some will understand it most won’t! Chancellor’s holdout did have a silver lining, with DeShawn Shead and Dion Bailey gaining invaluable experience. The Seahawks refused to add that cash to the deal because they did not want to set such a precedent on a contract that still has three years remaining.
It is still up in the air whether or not Chancellor will be ready to play on Sunday, but regardless the Seahawks have gotten a leader back.
