Baby Boy Dies in ‘Tragic Accident’ Outside Ohio Wal-Mart
An 8-month-old boy was found dead in the back of a sports utility vehicle parked for hours in an Ohio store parking lot after one of his parents apparently forgot to drop him off at daycare with his siblings, police said on Thursday.
The baby boy has been identified as Jayce Markell Benjamin, of Garfield Heights.
The child’s grandmother didn’t realize he was still there when she drove the SUV to work at the Macedonia Wal-Mart around 11 a.m.
Around 5:30 p.m. Macedonia police arrived on the scene after reports of an unresponsive baby.
The mother then called the grandmother, who checked the vehicle and discovered the boy, WOIO-TV reports.
The baby was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m.by the Medical Examiner.
An autopsy is scheduled for September 24.
Macedonia police say the investigation is in the early stages, but that the baby was killed in what appears to be a tragic accident.
“The poor baby couldn’t help itself, and you would’ve thought somebody would’ve seen the baby walking by the vehicle, see a baby in the auto seat and reported it”, said Pat Haralson, who was shopping at Walmart Wednesday.
The Summit County Medical Examiner news release says the name will be released once all family members are notified.
