Netflix orders 12 new episodes of Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’
The streaming giant has ordered 12 new original episodes set to begin production later this year.
Series creator Charlie Brooker will pen the episodes and serve as exec producer and co-showrunner alongside Annabel Jones (the pair oversaw Black Mirror’s previous seven episodes, which aired on Channel 4 in the UK).
While Netflix is involved in the production of the new “Black Mirror” episodes from the get-go, many shows branded as Netflix Originals – including “Between” from Canada and “Peaky Blinders”, “Between” and “Happy Valley” from the United Kingdom – are first broadcast in other countries and merely make their US debuts on the platform. “I just hope none of these new story ideas come true”, said Booker. Most notably, Jon Hamm starred in the last installment, the 2014 Christmas special “White Christmas”. In addition to that star power, Black Mirror’s availability on Netflix and recognition at the Peabody Awards have also helped the once little-known anthology series become much more popular. Maybe that brand new Netflix account won’t be needed after all… The series will premiere internationally in all Netflix territories, outside the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The series won an worldwide Emmy award and was nominated for a BAFTA in 2012. For those who haven’t yet watched the series, Black Mirror has a Twilight Zone-style format, except it tends to focus on the impact of current – and potential future – technology.
There were hints about this possibility back in January, when Charlie Corwin, one of the executives involved with “Black Mirror“, said the show was ripe for an American adaptation.
For Endemol, meanwhile, Black Mirror joins a roster of originals that includes Big Brother, Peaky Blinders, Broadchurch, The Biggest Loser and more.
