Red Wings lose exhibition opener at Chicago 5-4 in overtime
The top two forward lines are all guys you can expect to see on the ice for Detroit’s season opener, while all six defensemen will see time for the Wings this season, as will Mrazek in net. Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha will be playing tonight, their 2 biggest prospects.
The Wings made an early grasp at the eventual 6-1 victory.
But if this were a regular game, overtime would have been hardly needed.
Kyle Baun, Jonathan Toews, Teuvo Teravainen and Ryan Garbutt also scored for defending champion Chicago.
After allowing a total of three goals in their first two preseason games, the Penguins gave up that many in a span of 4:48 during the opening period.
I couldnt help but smile, Larkin said about first goal with the Wings.
Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Trevor Daley, left, celebrates his game winning goal against the Detroit Red Wings with right wing Patrick Kane (88) in the overtime period of their pre-season NHL hockey game in Chicago, Tuesday, September 22, 2015.
Pulkkinen got on the board as well scoring an open shot where he sent the puck over the shoulder of the goaltender before watching the puck get in for his first.
Later in the period, the captain took his turn at the scoring well as he fired in a shot to make it a 2-0 contest. “It gives us a chance to finish it with the players on the ice….”
Jimmy Howard played the entire game, making 34 saves.
Franzen’s approach was one of fearlessness. “I think I’ll be fine”. Just stay healthy and have fun.
“He looked real good”, coach Jeff Blashill said.
I’ll admit, this is a pretty broad “player to watch”, but I’ll explain further. “He is a very accountable defensive player who has a great ability to score goals”.
The Red Wings were not done however, and they scored three goals before the end of the period to force overtime. It is a potential third line with the ability to wreak havoc on opponents, who will have used their best defenders on the top two lines. The goal of a preseason game isn’t to turn it into a donnybrook, but when one of your starting forwards takes an elbow to the dome before we’re even at the banner raising ceremony, it’s certainly worth a visit from a teammate. With Glendening, Andersson, Henrik Zetterberg, Brad Richards and Riley Sheahan already on the roster, Larkin may be best suited on the wing, learning the game at National Hockey League speed. “He seems like he has got more energy and he is happy and joking around in the locker room”. But I think that’s a great thing. “Maybe you want to do a little bit more than you need to. It was always my intent to keep going”. As for his head, he manages intermittent pain.
