Mount Fuji to Get Wi-Fi | Outside Online
Renowned for its snow-capped symmetrical cone and scenic beauty, Mount Fuji lies about 100km to the south west of Tokyo. Adding up to the list of popular destinations offering free WiFi, Japan’s Mt Fuji will let climbers use free Internet atop the iconic peak and give climbers another motivation to take the summit.
Time.com reported that the program is aimed at encouraging hikers from Europe and the U.S.to share their Mount Fuji experiences through social media.
Local officials are working with a telecom company to bring Wi-Fi service as soon as later this summer. “The free Internet access will be available at the fifth station from July 10 through September 14 and around the summit between July 10 and September 10, according to the Yamanashi prefectural government”. The number of tourists visiting the 12,388-foot mountain has been increasing over the past few years, with between 40,000 and 50,000 hikers reportedly making their way along the Yoshidaguchi course last year. Canada, for example, announced plans in 2014 to install Wi-Fi in up to 20 locations in its national parks.
Users will have access to the free service, which will be protected by a special password, for 72 hours after first logging in. And as you know, if it wasn’t Instagrammed, you never really did climb that breathtaking snowy mountain more than 12,000 feet above sea level.
