Red shirt rally leader Jamal Md Yunos arrested
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim had earlier said Jamal would be summoned to the Dang Wangi police headquarters and his statement over the planned rally would be recorded.
Red shirt rally organiser Datuk Jamal Md Yunos has been detained by the police at about 9pm today in Kuala Lumpur.
According to a statement by his secretary, Durrany Izam, Jamal was brought immediately to Dang Wangi police station after his arrest to be investigated under the Sedition Act 1948.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad confirmed that he had been arrested under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code over his alleged threat to cause a riot.
“They (the media) only published certain parts (of the statement) without taking into consideration what was said in the press conference”.
“I just expressed my concerns if the authorities, including the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry fail to take action based on the complaints of the group which gathered at Petaling Street on Sept 16”, he added.
This evening he told the media outside the Ampang Jaya police headquarters that he would be attending a kenduri function tomorrow. There is still Raya celebration and there are a lot of sacrificial programmes so I will not be involved in tomorrow’s gathering.
“Even as a Malay, putting aside my position as a deputy minister and Umno member, I think he should stop”.
It was reported that the rally at Petaling Street was to be held to object to the presenceof foreigners conducting business at the said area, including the selling of banned and counterfeit products.
The Star also reported that more than half of the traders in Petaling Street? were afraid of what might happen tomorrow and have sought advice from Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association chairman Datuk Ang Say Tee if they should close shop.
Mr Nur Jazlan reportedly said that Malaysians are allowed freedom of speech but should halt their actions when it comes to racial sensitivities.
