Sons of Confederate Veterans, state compromise on license plate redesign
A Georgia activist group is very upset with the compromise the state made with the Sons of Confederate Veterans over Georgia license plates that still clearly shows the Confederate battle emblem.
He stopped short of calling for the Sons of Confederate Veterans tags to be phased out entirely as has been ordered in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
“The Sons of Confederate Veterans’ logo has been our logo since 1896, that’s 119 years…”
The Georgia Department of Revenue reported the deal with the group to redesign the plate that removes the faded background showing the battle emblem but allows the smaller emblem on the left to remain.
Roof can be seen holding the flag in pictures.
But supporters say it is an important symbol of their history and heritage, and many southerners have held fast to the Confederate flag amid the recent efforts to do away with it. In the wake of the shooting, NASCAR chairman Brian France declared that the flag would be banned at events and tracks, but many fans refused to comply. The Sons of Confederate Veterans countered with a membership drive, a lobbying campaign and the threat of legal action.
Confederate symbols of all kinds – flags, monuments, statues, license plates, even retail items – have come under unprecedented attack across the South in the months since the Charleston church massacre.
One fan, a man named Dennis Dease, wore a Confederate flag hat, shirt, and suspenders. “And I think he muffed it”, Democrat State Sen. The flag doesn’t stand for racism or nothing like that. Better Georgia, a progressive group in the state, has released a petition against the flag. “It’s time to stand up for what’s right and remove the Confederate flag from all Georgia license plates“. According to its website, more than 4785 people have signed.
