McCarthy in line to be speaker of the house
It’s a new day, and it might not be the same again. “It’s a wonderful day”, he said.
House Speaker John Boehner announced Friday that he is resigning, making Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Californian, the leading candidate to claim the most powerful job in Congress. [LA Times].
But he isn’t the only one reacting gleefully – conservatives are, too. Boehner said in a phone interview this weekend from Seattle during a fundraising trip to the Pacific Northwest, referring especially to the grind of constant travel. Marco Rubio informed them that Boehner was resigning. Instead, the forum became something of a victory lap, as one 2016 candidate after another joined in the celebration of Boehner’s departure by lashing out at congressional Republicans for not fighting hard enough for conservative priorities.
Sources told The New York Times Boehner intends to give up his seat and leadership role at the end of October.
“I will tell you he has always conducted himself with courtesy and civility with me”.
Brubaker added that the perception of the conservative wing of the GOP being oppositional is wrong.
“I’m not a psychologist but I think John probably pretty much decided that the more he did, the more friction would be caused, and that he probably thought it was best for him to leave soon anyway, which I think is wrong”, he said. “I’ve had to convince people for two weeks that I’m not going to jump off the side of a building”.
A move to strip taxpayer funding to the organization was blocked in the Senate on Thursday. Tony we need to schedule these weekly, once a week.
Some presidential contenders piled on. “In our democracy, you don’t get what you want 100 percent of the time”.
Yesterday, John Boehner was speaker of the House. “My own request is can you come more often?”
The divide within the GOP was on full display across town at the Capitol. His tenure has been defined by his early struggles to reach budget agreements with Obama and his wrestling with the expectations of tea party conservatives. “But the time has come to turn the page and allow a new generation of leadership in this country”.
None of them succeeded, of course, but Boehner’s name was never too far from words like “mutiny” or “revolt” when it came to his own party.
He was ultimately undone by tea partyers and other conservatives he’d kept in line as speaker for almost five years – barely, and at a cost.
Walden said he wondered what the Pope told Boehner that may have affected his decision: “I don’t know if this was a message from God but I wish he sent a different message”.
Even the relatively moderate Gov. Christie of New Jersey has taken to bashing the GOP-run Congress, saying it has failed to live up to campaign promises such as repealing and replacing Obamacare.
Indeed, Washington Analysis states that with a short-term CR, concern “quickly shifts” to what happens with the next funding measure and a “necessary increase” in the nation’s debt limit. But the understated praise from Priebus and Bush was lost amid the excitement at Boehner’s resignation at the Value Voters forum.

“The resignation of the Speaker is a stark indication of the disarray of the House Republicans – a demonstration of their obsession with shutting down the government at the expense of women’s health and a sign of the failure of the House Republicans to be able to willing to engage in dialogue for the good of the American people”, she said in a news conference Friday.
“We have obviously had a lot of disagreements and politically we’re at different ends of the spectrum”, Obama said. “It’s unfortunate”.
Stutzman had previously accused Boehner and Republican leadership of duping him into voting for an omnibus spending bill during the lame duck session past year.
