Asked why the Speaker was resigning, Mr King said it was “to avoid putting the party through tumult”. Boehner believes stepping down will prevent further disarray among the House Republicans.

The under-fire Mr Boehner, a member of Congress since 1991, had struggled with conservative backbenchers within his party since 2011 when he became speaker, a role that is second in line to the presidency.
In 2013, one of those fights led to a two-week partial shutdown of the Federal government.
The tactic was unsuccessful.
Boehner said he always planned to announce his resignation in November, but moved up the date.
McCarthy is a pro-life conservative who does not support renewal of the Export-Import Bank and has vowed to vote against any global warming legislation that would raise taxes.
U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, an Ooltewah Republican, noted that Boehner helped build the largest Republican majority in the House since 1928 and has been “a great public servant throughout his tenure”.
