Hyundai to recall 470000 Sonatas in the U.S. over engine issue
The company announced that they are recalling 470,000 Sonatas in order to replace vital engine components. NHTSA says that “metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft”.
The vehicles in question were built between December 11, 2009, and April 12, 2012, at Hyundai’s Alabama, manufacturing facility, equipped with either a 2.0-liter turbo or 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. The facility’s initial process for removing metallic debris…
Meanwhile, 99,500 Accents are being recalled to check on faulty brake switches. Oil flow is consequently restricted to the connecting rod bearings, eventually causing damage and possible engine failure. In this case, the engine can stall, increasing the risk of a crash. NHTSA estimates that the problem exists with about 2 percent of the cars.
Dealers will inspect the cars and replace engine assemblies if necessary for free. The company also will increase the engine warranty for 10 years or 120,000 miles. According to Kia spokesperson Jame Hope, Kia is not impacted by this recall.
What Owners Should Do: Hyundai will begin notifying owners on November 2; owners will receive a second notification later when parts become available. The recall affects models built between March 1, 2009, and February 11, 2011. Also, the cruise control may not be deactivated by stepping on the brake, and the gear shifter may get stuck in the “park” position.
