Confirmed: The Apple Car is coming in 2019
2019 is obviously highly optimistic as a date for when you can actually test drive and buy an Apple auto, given the project is still very much in its early stages right now.
Apple has been working on feasibility for more than a year now, they had meeting with two groups of California officials before given the green signal by the executives to proceed, publication said. “Leaders of the project, code-named Titan, have been given permission to triple the 600-person team”, sources told the paper.
Analysts say Apple has the financial resources and ambition to design and build a high-end vehicle, although some believe it’s more likely interested in developing software for use in cars made by other companies.
A number of questions remain however, particularly as to how Apple plan to actually produce the vehicle once it enters the manufacturing stage.
Previous reports put the targeted unveil date at 2020, so this update suggests Apple is speeding up the original project timeline.
Apple has been making some groundbreaking new hires recently, giving credence to the idea that a vehicle prototype may be well in the works.
Apple still hasn’t gone public about its electric vehicle project, reportedly named Titan, but new developments are coming to light nonetheless.
At this point, the Apple-BMW partnership is not official and the company will have to go over a massive amount of hiring over the next couple of months as well. However, the report said, Apple is unlikely to make its first vehicle fully autonomous. Back in the spring, an Apple team met with representatives of the GoMentum station, a former shooting range for the U.S. Marine that was transformed into a secured testing facility for driverless and connected cars. The Journal said the 2019 target date is far from concrete, as the company would still need to refine features and clear regulatory and production barriers.
