Volkswagen emission manipulations affect vehicles in Germany
Volkswagen has been reeling since the US Environmental Protection Agency revealed last Friday that the group had rigged its diesel cars to pass emissions tests, potentially laying itself open to criminal charges and substantial fines.
The scandal then spread as European nations and Australia, among other countries, said they would launch probes into the diesel engines involved. After leading Volkswagen successfully for 8 years, he will likely part with a hefty termination payment. It has said some 11 million cars worldwide have the software.
Volkswagen has said 11 million cars globally had the software fitted, but it was not activated in the bulk of them.
The news echoes what occurred this week when VW CEO Martin Winterkorn was reported in the German media to have resigned, only to contradict that news. “Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group”, Winterkorn said yesterday.
“There must be people responsible for allowing the manipulation of emission levels to happen”, he told rbb-Inforadio on Thursday.
One day after chief executive Martin Winterkorn quit, the source said the head of the company’s US operations and top engineers at premium VW brands Audi and Porsche would be dismissed, regardless of whether they knew about the cheating.
While it’s true that other automakers have had to recall faulty cars this is different – Volkswagen made their cars faulty on objective. “We have written to the ARAI to find out whether Volkswagen is selling the same models in India that have been found violating USA rules”, Ambuj Sharma, additional secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industry, told Reuters.
To maintain the performance and the value of an affected Clean Diesel Volkswagen the Urea solution is the only way to go.
As Volkswagen admits that it manipulated the emissions tests of its cars in Europe, Danish experts warn that the amount of nitrogen dioxide being released on Danish roads could be far higher than thought. It did not say what the cause for the alleged problem was.
Winterkorn said VW must continue the process of “clarification and transparency”.
It said a number of employees had been put on leave until the details of the emissions cheating were cleared up.
