Kim Kardashian’s ‘Pope is Dope’ Tweet Lost in Translation in Argentina
The reality TV star tweeted “The Pope is dope” in response to the Papal visit to New York.
The episode began when Kardashian published a lapidary tweet concerning the pontiff.
Indeed, the hashtags #popeisdope, #catholicswag and #rockstarpope have been trending throughout Pope Francis’ U.S. tour.
Or maybe she chose it because it just happened to rhyme.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, a journalist for website Primicias Ya thought Kardashian said, “The Pope is Drugs”, commenting, “it can not be interpreted as positive”. The article, which is not bylined, goes on to defend Francis, listing his benevolent acts, and calling the Argentine native “our pope”.
The unidentified writer warned Francis, who was born in Argentina, could have “found an enemy” in the US. It also takes a swipe at Kardashian, reminding readers that she once featured in a sex tape.
Kim Kardashian set off a kerfluffle in Argentina after tweeting that very sentiment. Without a doubt, this couldn’t be positive.
One of the commenters, perhaps less gently, suggested that Primicias Ya should better “inform themselves before creating controversy”. Another remarks on the star’s many entrepreneurial endeavours.
Around 18,000 people retweeted Kardashian’s message, but somehow the phrase got lost in translation.
