Fire Prevention Day & Open House
The worldwide Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing smoke alarms every 10 years and having a combination of both ionization and photo electric smoke alarms to keep you alert to all types of home fires. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night, between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep”. These facts underscore the extreme importance of having working smoke alarms in all bedrooms.
According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. While there are numerous ways to improve home safety, fires are a common threat that you have the power to prevent with preparation.
Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, including the basement. They are encouraging community members to push the test button on their alarms at least once a month.
Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old – or sooner if they don’t respond properly.
As in past seasons, the activities will kick off National Fire Prevention Week. Never disconnect smoke alarm batteries no matter how annoying the sound; remember: a “chirping” alarm signals a need for a fresh battery.
Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
The Garden City Fire Department has announced it will be holding its annual Fire Prevention Day and Open House on Sunday, October 4th at Fire Headquarters on Stewart Ave in the Village Hall Complex. Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.
The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m.in Carousel Park and includes a chili cook-off, fire safety demonstrations, children’s activities and exhibitors.
