The pope also offered a strong endorsement of Iran’s agreement with the United States and five other world powers to limit its nuclear programme – a deal vehemently opposed by many USA politicians.
He told the interfaith ceremony at the September 11 museum that there should be opposition to “any attempt to make us all the same”.

This is the pontiff’s first ever visit to New York, and up to 20,000 worshippers are expected to join the mass, which has a start time of 6 p.m. ET.
The pope – who says he hasn’t watched TV in decades and doesn’t know how to work a computer – even got a lesson in how to use a touchscreen from fourth-grader Kayla Osborne.

At the service’s conclusion, Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, stood and, beaming with pride, addressed the momentous occasion.
Just before leaving the Garden, he gave the thousands of New Yorkers the same “homework” he had given a gymnasium full of elementary and middle schoolers that afternoon: “Don’t forget to pray for me!”
The crowd in the gym included about 150 immigrants and refugees, some of them in the USA illegally.
Later, a papal Mass was scheduled at Madison Square Gardens.
From Central Park he went to Madison Square Garden.
An imam and rabbi from New York paid their respects the victims of 9/11 and the first responders and spoke about how their respective religions promoted peace and unity.
