Bowe Bergdahl Will Reportedly Be the Subject of Serial’s Next Season
S, the runaway hit podcast that debuted in October and converted millions of listeners into podcast disciples and Adnan Syed devotees, is gearing up for its second season. But at least we finally have an answer to the second-biggest question raised by NPR’s Serial – namely, “What will Season 2 be about?”
Though the report has not yet been confirmed by the production staff at Serial, it does come from a reliable source, Matthew Farwell, a former soldier who was based in Afghanistan and contributed to Rolling Stone’s 2012 feature on the story. Boal, Koenig and other Serial producers were spotted in a courtroom at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio for a hearing to determine if the former POW will be tried in a court-martial.
The case of Bergdahl is an interesting and perplexing one because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding his disappearance, although he has maintained that he left the safety of his base to report misconduct in his unit to a general officer.
Haqqani network, a Taliban-allied guerilla insurgent group, held Bowe Bergdahi prisoner for five years before he was released in exchange of five Guantanamo Bay detainees in May 2014. According to Bergdahl, he was attempting to draw attention to the bad conditions within his unit. But many suspect his motives weren’t so pure, and he’s been the subject of many conspiracy theories. “Doesn’t feel very menschy“, Cordon said. “Over the past few months they’ve been reporting on a variety of stories for both seasons two and three of Serial, along with other podcast projects”.
But Emily Condon, who works on Serial and sister show This American Life, explained that the intention is merely to avoid commenting on the cases being researched. After Serial, Syed was granted an appeal to reexamine the case, so the rumblings about Koenig’s potential impact on an open case are justifiably serious.
Season one’s host, Sarah Koenig, had announced in the spring that season 2 would premiere this fall, with a third season slated for spring 2016. One told the publication: “Anyone who tries to benefit from Bowe’s situation has little interest in the truth”. “I think it’s the height of crassness for them to do this when it could potentially affect the legal proceedings”. “My concern is that the truth is being diluted by those looking to gain from Bowe’s story”. Boal and Lindgren will also be helping tell the story on Serial, alongside host Sarah Koenig, as they await the ending of their movie – the end of Bergdahl’s trial.
