Sanders ‘very disappointed’ with Carson’s remarks on Muslims
When asked if he thought Islam was “consistent with the Constitution”, he responded that he did not, and that the United States of America should never elect a Muslim president. He’s saying, personally, I am not going to support someone who is Muslim because I do not believe that coincides with my beliefs and what America is about.
BEN FERGUSON, CNN POLITICAL COMMENTATOR: I strongly disagree.
“We don’t put people at the head of our country whose faith might interfere with them carrying out the duties of the Constitution. By targeting various groups for suspicion, calling Muslims a danger to the Constitution or attacking undocumented immigrants as rapists and murderers, they are opening up a space for some of the worst elements of our society”, the author of the op-ed says. It says quite clearly in Article VI, paragraph 3 of the Constitution that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States“. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, which is one of the more extreme self-appointed defenders of Islam in this country, went even further. And by the way, they say there’s a problem with certain militants that obviously you report on every night on your newscasts.
“I’ve come to be familiarized with the PC culture and I’m willing to fight it. You know, somebody has to stand up for who we are”, he said. How much that surge in donations accounted for wasn’t immediately clear, though the chairman of the PAC said that his phone had “exploded” with supporters who agreed with Carson’s message.
Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon running near the front of the pack for the Republican Party’s 2016 presidential nomination, cracked that can open and invited the body politic to feast on September 20 on NBC’s “Meet the Press“.
But until these tenants are fully renounced…I can not advocate any Muslim candidate for president.
Second, so long as the official did take such an oath or affirmation, no other religious test could be applied.
“I don’t believe that they do”, Carson said, adding, “When I look at Islamic nations, what I see are people who don’t give women equal rights”.
Beyond their willingness to consider Muslim candidates, many Americans express hostility toward the religion in general. Carson’s support appears to have soared as he emphasizes his stance against “political correctness”.
