Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says she is saddened by the death of baseball legend Yogi Berra. Berra played on 10 championship teams for the New York Yankees.
Wednesday, Jeff Roberson sat in that spot, remembering the Hall-of-Fame catcher and his catch phrases.
Perhaps his most famous line? “Yogi gave everything at least 140%”. Yogi wasn’t Berra’s real name, after all; he was christened Lawrence.
Berra, who died last night at age 90, hasn’t been in the desert in a few years. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Carmen. Garagiola told me. “But we had each other, and that was everything”.
He said his fingers were so short that they had to be painted just to be more visible to pitchers. His knack for articulating original truisms – “yogisms” – made him a favorite of even non-baseball fans. He said Berra often went into the clubhouse to interact with the players.
“While his baseball wit and wisdom brought out the best in generations of Yankees, his imprint in society stretches far beyond the walls of Yankee Stadium”.
On travel directions: “When you come to a fork in the road take it”.
“You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours”.
Yogi Berra seemingly always had a amusing line on hand, usually a little bit ridiculous.
Berra and Joe Garagiolia, who also played catcher for several major league teams before becoming a broadcaster and TV personality, grew up in the same St. Louis neighborhood and were friends from childhood.
And billionaire real-estate mogul Donald Trump shared a photo of himself with Berra at the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester, New York on Instagram. He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. He loved to talk baseball, and could frequently be seen talking to Yankees player about the game.
It would be hard for Rodriguez to explain the paternal Berra to those who haven’t met him, he said.
The resume accumulated over his 19-year playing career is staggering, however, especially considering he stood just five foot seven inches tall. “If I had to do it over, I’d do it again”.
