Warning Shot: United Made Title Statement – LVG
Louis van Gaal has hailed teenage signing Anthony Martial – who has scored three goals for Manchester United in his first three games.
Martial followed his debut goal against Liverpool with a double in the 3-2 victory at Southampton that moved United up to second place in the English Premier League.
Martial joined Man United for a staggering fee of £36million from AS Monaco and many criticised the fee and the nature of the move.
“There’s huge pressure on him, he’ll be aware of that – the expectation, the price tag”, Neville said.
But he didn’t keep the award for too long – he returned home and his wife Samantha posted a picture on Instagram of the actual recipient of his prize…
“I am disappointed because in my opinion we beat ourselves here”, Koeman said at the press conference. Van Gaal’s assessment also appeared to be contradicted by his decision to substitute right-back Matteo Darmian at half-time. Three matches in a row, he scores three goals, so one for one.
“Of course, we shall always strive for it, we also did previous year, but you can’t expect from a team in transition already a title, but when we are close we shall grab it”, he said.
When it was put to Van Gaal that Koeman had pointed out the weaknesses of his team’s defence the United manager first accused the media of having misquoted his opposite number. “Not every player can adapt in that system”.
Martial scored either side of half-time in United’s 3-2 win over Southampton.
Although Anthony Martial had a bright start to his Premier League career, he still has to prove his consistency for Manchester United. He just wanted to show what he can do and you can see it’s not just about his goals.
“It’s a fantastic result away at Southampton and I think we have made a statement that we shall compete for the title”, he told Sky Sports News.
“I hate players who always play the ball back to the goalkeeper. He will be a great player for the future of Manchester United“.
“He is a very good guy so I am happy to have him in this football club”.
“His talent is at a high level and he adapts to the system of how we want to play”.
