New York Jets Rumors: Ryan Fitzpatrick To Remain Starter Over Geno Smith
On Tuesday, Jets head coach Todd Bowles announced that Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain the team’s starting quarterback, even after Smith is fully recovered from his injury that was suffered when IK Enemkpali punched him last month.
According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Bowles wasn’t certain Ivory would be able to finish the Jets’ Week 2 matchup in Indianapolis given the health issues afflicting the veteran running back. But we’re making great strides and nobody is going to be good coming right off the top. However, when Smith went down with the injury and Fitzpatrick helped lead the Jets to a solid start, they had little choice in naming Fitzpatrick the starter moving forward.
The Jets are the second National Football League team for Davis, who signed with the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in May. In two games, he has totaled four touchdown passes and two interceptions with a 64 percent completion rate. “He has to read defenses all over again”. The clock showed 6:27, the Jets were holding a narrow three-point lead, the Colts had switched from a lot of double coverage on Marshall to single-coverage on the drive.
Smith and Petty both received reps with the scout team offense Wednesday, Bowles said. Since Rex Ryan took over, this team has always had a strong front seven but they have only succeeded in rushing the passer during the years that Revis and Cro have been on the field. Everything is clicking with Fitzpatrick and it’s won the Jets two games in convincing fashion. Previously, Bowles had been saying Smith wouldn’t be ready until the fifth game of the season. “One of them will be the No. 2 quarterback, he could be”.
Perhaps the most telling bit of evidence to suggest that the Jets are going to be around for the long haul is Bowles, a first-year head coach so gifted with knowledge, meticulous in his preparation and grounded in his sense of self he’s already endeared himself to a fan base usually very short on patience.
“Offensively, we didn’t play as well as we wanted to”, Fitzpatrick said.
“We’re just going to keep progressing, getting better every week”, Bowles said. Next up is a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 27, followed by a road game against the Miami Dolphins on October 4.
As anyone watching Monday night’s dismantling of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck noticed, however, the strength of the team is an aggressive, ball-hawking defense. Smith participated in some 7-on-7 drills in practice last week. The Jets had no weapons to go to on offense and an extremely suspect secondary (that’s being kind). Defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers oversaw a game plan that forced five turnovers and kept the Colts out of sorts all night.
