Fournette huge, Harris clutch as Tigers hold off Orangement
Just think: Fournette’s 244 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries Saturday in the Carrier Dome – his third career-high rushing total in as many games this season – could have been even more awesome. When we previewed the Orangemen lineup the special teamers really stood out. Fournette had 228 yards rushing in the game with three touchdowns and he had two scores of over 25-yards.
The biggest play of the day was a broken play. Lots of them. LSU racked up 120 penalty yards in the game.
LSU won the coin toss and deferred its decision until the second half.
-Keenan Reynolds, Navy, ran for 142 yards and three TDs and threw for another score in a 28-18 win over UConn.
With 7:48 to go in the 3rd quarter Tre White caught a punt at midfield and split the coverage, outracing several would be tacklers for a touchdown. He’ll mention the responsibility he feels to be a role model for younger cousins, or how he keeps up with an old youth football teammate whose father was gunned down during one of their practices in his native New Orleans years ago. The Orange quickly punted back, pinning LSU at its 9 after White’s fair catch.
The menacing presence that LSU running back Leonard Fournette projects when he topples would-be tacklers is missing as he steps casually into a crowd of reporters. But the Tigers do not play a now ranked opponent until November. 7, when they are scheduled to go to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama.
LSU running back Derrius Guice (5) is hit by Syracuse safety…
Dixon, who lined up to attempt the long field goal, got the first down with his run and showed off some leaping ability. Meanwhile, Syracuse played on Saturday without its top two quarterbacks. LSU led 7-3 with 6:58 left in the half. Mahoney 8-yard pass to Josh Parrish on third-and-8 gives Syracuse a first-and-goal at the LSU 4. LSU recovered the onside kick and held on. 3.
The Orange started three drives from near midfield and only managed a 43-yard field goal by Cole Murphy in the second quarter. His scoring runs of 40, 29, and 1 yard were impressive.
In the first half, Mahoney seemed to struggle to figure out LSU’s defense.
The national leader in yards and points per game coming in, Baylor scored at least 70 for the sixth time since 2013 and reached 60 for the 15th time in five seasons – six more than any other FBS school.
A personal foul on LSU again provided field position for the Orange. The Tigers’ defense started strong agains Syracuse’s fifth string QB Zack Mahoney.
With Syracuse trailing 31-17 after another LSU, Mahoney’s interception came on SU’s next possession. It was Fournette’s 62-yard scoring dash that turned everything back around for the Tigers.
In doing so, he becomes the first running back in LSU history to rush for 200 yards in consecutive games.
From its 44, Syracuse put together a 7-play, 56-yard touchdown drive that included two 15-yard penalties on the Tigers – a personal foul face mask and pass interference. It was under-thrown a bit, but still it was a great pass, and Dural got it for a 51-yard gain to the Syracuse 11-yard line. On Saturday, some mistakes and a lot of penalties helped Syracuse stay in the game, but as ESPN recapped, LSU still ended up winning 34-24.
TCU may have had an unexpected close call with SMU over the weekend, but the Horned Frogs came away victorious and Boykin had a mammoth game.
