Jaap Stam: ‘I want to manage in England’
Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has admitted he would seize the chance to manage a Premier League team – and revealed he has already had interest in his services from some English clubs.
Stam won three EPL titles during his 1998-2001 stint with Manchester United as well as the Champions League and the FA Cup before then manager Alex Ferguson sent shockwaves around the football world by selling him to Lazio for 15 million pounds.
While the ex-Netherlands global knows he still has to prove himself as a coach, he has his sights set on a return to the “booming” football scene in England. It was fantastic to be again in England – all my implausible reminiscences got here flooding again to me.
“I remember playing at The Dell when we travelled to Southampton”. Stam is now cutting his managerial teeth under Frank de Boer in his role as reserve team boss at the Amsterdam Arena, although he appears to have had his passion for the Premier League reignited by a recent visit to compatriot Ronald Koeman. Now they’ve a model new stadium. “Of course, I nonetheless need to show myself on the prime degree”, he added.
While Stam is impressed by the improvement in facilities in the Premier League, he is shocked by the amount of money certain players are earning these days.
“I never thought I would become a football manager. There have been occasions in my enjoying profession when I thought managers have been going berserk over nothing and I couldn’t see myself ever getting so labored up”, Stam stated.
“I had plenty of opportunities to earn far more money during my career”.
“I am not going to name names, but there are certain players who are happy to earn £200,000-a-week and sit on the bench at Chelsea or Man City”.
