Crowd behaviour tars Perth AFL fans
Perth’s AFL crowds are in the bad books yet again after vision emerged of a man hitting a woman during Fremantle’s preliminary final loss to Hawthorn at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.
AFL Chief Executive Gillon McLachlan said the behaviour was intolerable.
“Violence in any form is not tolerated at our game”.
McLachlan apologised to fans saying he was upset that football supporters were being represented by the incident.
“I’m disappointed for our industry that I’m talking about an issue as outrageous as what happened last night”.
The perpetrator has now been given a life ban from Domain Stadium and is being shamed by outraged Australians who viewed the horrifying footage. And that’s when he (allegedly) struck me to the throat.
The man is quickly engulfed by surrounding spectators as other onlookers attempt to shield children from the violent outburst and usher them to safety.
Police have charged Cody Yarran, 24, with common assault, obstructing a police officer and disorderly behaviour in a public place after the Friday night altercation at Perth’s Domain Stadium.
His bail application was refused and will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance on October 5.
He is not a member of the Fremantle Football Club.
The 38-year-old victim, known as Sarah, had allegedly asked the man to tone down his language.
AN assault on a woman at an AFL match in Perth was “a cowardly act” that’s embarrassing for Western Australia, Premier Colin Barnett says.
Using the name “Sarah” for privacy reasons, she said she was enjoying the Fremantle-Hawthorne final with her family when the rowdy Fremantle supporter began swearing and challenging people to fight him.
“The last couple of years were a bit closer and it was a bit of a relief at the end, but at the moment it feels like a really good interstate win, against a hostile crowd”. I said, “mate, you need to sit down, you are ruining it for the children here” and he said “I don’t give a “f” about the kids, I’ll smash anyone who comes near me”.
