Hyundai recalling almost half-million sedans

Hyundai is recalling and replacing the engines in almost a half-million Sonata sedans in the US because of a manufacturing defect that could cause them to stall.

Hyundai revised its production process in 2012 to better remove metallic debris, without implementing a recall at the time. This can cause an oil flow restriction causing failure in rod bearings.

However, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries attributed to this condition so far, Hyundai said.

Hyundai spokeswoman informed on Friday that 470,000 Sonata vehicles produced between 2011 and 2012 at the Alabama plant will get recalled on September 2. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.

Hyundai is recalling about 570,000 cars to prevent engine fires and to once again wrestle with the haunting brake light switch from hell.

Hyundai will also extend powertrain warranties on the engine sub-assembly for affected models. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available. It’s an expansion of a recall issued in 2013.

Hyundai will replace the brake switch at no cost to owners starting November. 2, the company said.
